How the Seven Positions Work Together

The first two are a pair

Your rune and theirs are read against each other, not one after the other. Two runes of the same aett often mean you are both pushing in the same direction; a warm rune facing a closed one usually says more about timing and circumstance than about how much either of you cares.

Foundation is not Strengths

These two get confused constantly. Foundation is what the connection was built on — what drew you together and still sits underneath. Strengths is what is working now. A relationship can have a shaky foundation and real present-day strength, and the reverse happens just as often.

Challenges and Advice belong together

Read the fifth and sixth runes as one sentence. The fifth names the friction, the sixth names what would actually help with that specific friction. Taken alone the Challenges rune can read as a verdict; taken with the Advice rune it reads as a thing to do this week.

Outcome is a direction

The seventh rune describes where the current is running if nothing changes — not a fixed ending. That is exactly why the Advice rune sits before it. A difficult Outcome with a clear Advice rune is one of the more useful readings this spread produces.

Reading the Other Person's Side

What the second rune answers

Their feelings, their needs, and the way they are approaching the connection. This is the position most people come to this spread for, and it is what the spread is built to do — a single rune can answer the same question, but here the other person gets a stone of their own.

Before anything has started

It reads just as well for someone you have not told. Foundation then describes what the two of you already have in common rather than a shared history, and Advice tends to speak to the first move rather than to repair work.

Exes and long silences

For a relationship that ended, watch the gap between Foundation and Outcome. A warm foundation with a still Outcome — ᛁ Isa, ᚾ Nauthiz — usually points at something waiting rather than something finished, and the Advice rune is the one to take seriously.

If it says what you did not want

Sit with it for a day before drawing again. Redrawing the same relationship until the runes agree with you empties the practice out. If the reading genuinely does not fit the situation, ask a narrower question with the three rune reading instead.

Runes That Read Differently in Love

ᚷ Gebo and ᚹ Wunjo

Gebo is the gift and the exchange — in a relationship reading it is partnership itself, and in the Challenges position it usually means the exchange has gone one-sided. Wunjo is ease and shared joy, and in the Outcome position it is about as clear as this spread gets.

ᛒ Berkano and ᛚ Laguz

Berkano is growth and care, and often marks a connection that needs feeding rather than deciding. Laguz is water and intuition — in the Advice position it frequently means the thing you already sense but have not said out loud.

ᛁ Isa and ᚾ Nauthiz

Both are stillness, and neither is an ending. Isa is a pause — nothing moving, and nothing lost either. Nauthiz is a constraint that has to be dealt with before the rest of the reading can move. In the Partner position they far more often mean not now than not you.

Reversed runes

A reversed rune — merkstave — usually points at the same force blocked, delayed or turned inward, not at its opposite. In a relationship reading the position matters as much as the reversal: in the Partner position it far more often means not now than not you, and in Challenges it tends to name something being held back rather than something broken. Is this seven rune love reading free?
Yes, completely. No account, no email, no paywall between the draw and the interpretation, and no limit on how often you return. All 22 rune spreads on AskRunes work the same way.
Why does it ask for a name, and what happens to it?
The name is what lets the reading speak about a particular person instead of a generic partner. It goes to our server so the interpretation can be written around it, and that is all: it is not published, not shared, and not attached to an account, because there are no accounts. A first name or a nickname is plenty.
Can the runes tell me how someone feels about me?
That is what the second position is for. It reads their feelings, their needs and how they are approaching the connection, and it is set beside your own rune so the two can be compared. What it gives you is the shape of their side, not a transcript of their thoughts — and in practice that is the more useful thing, because it is what you can respond to.
Does it work if we are not together yet?
Yes, and it is one of the better uses of the spread. For a person you have not spoken to, Foundation describes what is already shared rather than a history, and Advice usually points at the opening move. Enter their name exactly as you would say it.
Can I read about an ex, or ask whether we will get back together?
You can. Read the Foundation and Outcome runes against each other, and give the Advice rune more weight than usual — with an ex it is generally the position that says whether anything is actually being asked of you. The reading describes where things stand and where they are tending, so treat the Outcome as a direction rather than a promise.
Is it only for romantic relationships?
No. The seven positions work for any bond between two people — a close friendship, a parent, a sibling, someone you work beside every day. Enter their name and read Partner as the other person. If the bond is not romantic, two other spreads may suit it better: the relationship dynamics spread reads the pattern running between you without a foundation or an outcome, and the family and community spread handles a whole household or team rather than a pair.
Do I draw the runes myself?

What if the Outcome rune is a difficult one?
It describes where the current is running if nothing changes, which is precisely the thing you can change — and the Advice rune sitting before it is there to say how. A hard Outcome next to a clear Advice rune is more useful than a comfortable Outcome with nothing to act on.
Can I ask a specific question instead of giving a name?
Not in this spread — its seven positions are fixed around a relationship, so it takes a person rather than a question. For a specific question, the single rune reading answers it in one stone, the three rune reading across past, present and future, and the decision-making spread when it is a choice between two options.
How often should I draw this spread?
Give a relationship reading room to be right or wrong before you repeat it — weeks rather than days, or when something real has changed between you. Drawing the same seven runes nightly tells you about your own worry, not about the connection.
