The Six Positions
Dynamic — the group’s own character
The first stone reads the energy of the whole rather than any member of it. Groups have a weather that nobody chose and everybody maintains, and naming it is usually the moment a family argument stops looking like a series of individual failings.
Role — your place in it
The peacemaker, the one who holds the money, the one who is told things, the one who left. Roles in a family are assigned early and rarely renegotiated out loud. This position is frequently the uncomfortable one, and it is where most of the usable insight lives.
Strengths and Challenges
The third and fourth stones name what holds the group together and what is straining it. Read Strengths first — a family reading that inventories only faults tells you nothing you did not already feel at three in the morning.
Guidance and Potential
The fifth says what would improve things, and it is aimed at what you can do rather than at what others should. The sixth describes what the group could become if that were done. Read them as a pair.

Which Group to Bring
Any group of more than two
A household, an extended family, a team, a band, a group of friends that has been together for years. The six positions describe a web, and any web with more than one strand in it reads the same way.
For two people, use the pair spread
A pair is not a small group; it has a different shape. The relationship dynamics spread gives each person a stone and the connection between them a third, which is the comparison this layout does not make.
The Guidance rune is yours to act on
It will not tell you how to change your brother. What it names is the move available to the person holding the stones, which is the only lever anyone actually has in a family — and often more effective than it sounds.
When the pattern is older than the group
Some family weather arrives already made, handed down before anyone in the room was born. If that is what you are looking at, the ancestral wisdom spread reads the line rather than the living web.
Runes That Change the Reading
ᛉ Algiz in Role
Algiz is the elk-sedge, protection and the raised hand. In the Role position it describes the person who guards the group — and it often carries a quiet question about who protects them.
ᛗ Mannaz in Guidance
Mannaz is humankind, the self among others. As advice it almost always means a conversation rather than a decision: the thing that improves a group is usually said aloud rather than arranged privately.
ᛁ Isa in Challenges
Isa is ice: nothing moving. In a family reading it is the classic rune of the frozen subject — the thing everyone knows and nobody raises. It is not a permanent state, and it does not thaw by itself.
Reversed runes
A reversed rune — merkstave — means the same force blocked, delayed or turned inward rather than its opposite. In the Role position it frequently marks a part you have outgrown but are still playing. Every rune, both ways up, is in the Elder Futhark guide.
