What the Five Positions Do

Situation and Calling

The first stone is where your working life actually is; the second is what would fit the deeper shape of you. Read them together before anything else. The distance between them is the whole reason most people open a career spread, and it is usually smaller than it feels.

Challenges name the specific block

Third position, and the one that turns a general dissatisfaction into something with edges: a skill, a person, a habit of saying yes, a market that has moved. Vague discontent is hard to act on; a named obstacle is not.

Potentials is about growth already available

Not a fantasy of a different life — the openings that exist in the situation you are in. This position frequently points sideways rather than up, at the adjacent thing you have not considered because it was not the plan.

Pathway is the next step

The fifth rune gives direction for what to do now, and it should be read last and weighted most. A grand Calling rune with a modest Pathway rune is a normal and healthy reading: the large thing is reached by the small step.

Wunjo is joy and fellowship. In the Calling position it points at work that suits you through the people in it rather than the task, which is an answer that surprises people who assumed their discontent was about the work itself.

ᚨ Ansuz in Pathway

Ansuz is the god-rune of speech and counsel. As a next step it almost always means a conversation: ask for the thing, say the true sentence, or find the person who has done it and listen.

Reversed runes

What if the Calling rune describes something I cannot afford to do?

That is common and it is not a dead end. Read Pathway next: with an unreachable Calling it usually names the version of that thing available to you now — a side of the current job, a smaller form, a first step that costs nothing.

How often should I draw it?

When something changes, or every few months. A career does not turn over weekly, and redrawing until the Potentials rune improves stops the reading from telling you anything.

Can I ask about someone else’s career?

You can, though the reading is written to the person asking. Where a colleague or a partner is part of the situation, ask about your side of it — that is where the Pathway rune can actually give you something to do.
