Inner Harmony Rune Spread:
Five Runes on Being at Odds With Yourself

Five Elder Futhark runes on your inner balance: where you actually stand, what you feel, what you think, what it is pointing at, and how to bring the four into one line.

You draw all five stones yourself and the reading is written around your question. It reads inward rather than at a situation, and it is reflection rather than treatment. Free, and no account.

Draw Your Five Runes

Ask about the part of yourself that has been out of step lately, and draw with it in mind.

How it works: type your question and press "Ask Runes". A circle of face-down rune stones will appear — tap it to shuffle, then tap five stones to draw them yourself. Your reading is revealed with a personal interpretation right below on this page.

The Five Positions

Core State — where you actually are

The first stone reads your baseline rather than the mood of the last hour. It is worth reading twice: people arriving at this spread in a bad week are often surprised to find a steady rune here, and that gap between state and weather is half the answer.

Feelings and Thoughts

The second and third stones are the two most common ways of being at odds with yourself. Read them against each other — a warm feeling rune beside a cold thinking rune describes somebody arguing themselves out of something, and the reverse describes somebody reasoning clearly and not believing it.

Purpose — what it is all pointing at

The fourth stone is the sense of meaning underneath the other three. When it comes up strong, difficulty in the earlier positions usually reads as work rather than drift. When it is quiet, that is often the actual complaint, whatever the question said.

Integration — how they come together

The last rune names what would bring the four into one line, and it is meant to be practical: a thing to stop doing, a thing to say, an hour to protect. Read it last and give it the final word.

What It Is For

Balance is not calm

The spread does not measure how peaceful you are. It reads whether the parts of you are pointing the same way, and someone in a demanding stretch of life can be perfectly integrated and not at all relaxed.

It is reflection, not treatment

This is a thinking practice. If what you are carrying is affecting your sleep, your work or your ability to get through the day, that belongs with a doctor or a therapist, and a rune reading is not a substitute for one.

When one part is clearly out of step

That is the useful reading. A single cold stone among four warm ones names the thing to attend to, and it is far more actionable than a generally encouraging spread with nothing in it to do.

Where it sits among the spreads

For the same balance read outward across a situation rather than inward, the five element reading uses the same number of stones. For what you have been keeping out of sight from yourself, the shadow work reading goes deeper and is harder work.

Runes That Change the Reading

ᛚ Laguz in Feelings

Laguz is water: intuition, flow, what moves under the surface. In the feelings position it usually says the emotional reading is accurate and has not been listened to — which makes the Integration rune worth taking seriously.

ᚨ Ansuz in Thoughts

Ansuz is speech and counsel. In the thinking position it often points at something that needs saying out loud before it will resolve internally — a conversation rather than more analysis.

ᛗ Mannaz in Core State

Mannaz is humankind, the self among others. As a baseline it describes someone whose steadiness is relational: harmony here depends on the people around you more than on solitude, which is worth knowing before you plan a retreat.

Reversed runes

A reversed rune — merkstave — means the same force blocked, delayed or turned inward rather than its opposite. In an inner-balance reading it commonly marks the part of yourself being overridden by the others. Every rune, both ways up, is in the Elder Futhark guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the inner harmony rune spread free?
Yes, completely. No account, no email, no paywall between the draw and the interpretation, and no limit on how often you return. All 22 rune spreads here work the same way.
Do I draw the five runes myself?
Yes. Type your question and press Ask Runes, and a circle of face-down stones appears. Tap the circle to shuffle, then tap five stones one at a time. Nothing is chosen for you, and each comes up upright or reversed as it falls.
Can it help with stress or low mood?
It can help you look at what is out of step and name it, which many people find steadying. It is not treatment. If your mood, sleep or daily functioning are affected, please talk to a doctor or a therapist — that is the right instrument, and this is not.
What if all five runes look difficult?
Read the Integration stone first in that case, and treat the rest as a description of a hard stretch rather than a verdict on you. A reading drawn in the middle of one bad week is reading that week as much as anything else.
How often should I draw it?
Monthly, or when something feels off. Inner balance does not change daily, and drawing every evening tends to turn the spread into part of the rumination rather than a break from it. For a daily practice the daily rune reading is the right size.
What is the difference between this and the five element reading?
This one reads inward — your state, feelings, thoughts, sense of purpose. The five element reading takes a situation outside you and breaks it into what is solid, said, driven, felt and meant. Same number of stones, opposite direction.
Can I meditate on the runes I drew?
Yes, and it pairs naturally with this spread — particularly the Integration stone. Our rune meditation guide covers sitting with a single stave and gives an affirmation for each of the 24 runes.
Which runes does the spread use?
The Elder Futhark: 24 runes in three ættir, the oldest and best documented runic alphabet, used across northern Europe from roughly 150 to 800 CE. All of them, upright and reversed, are in the rune meanings guide.
