One Question From Every Side

Earth — what is solid

The ground the question stands on: money, health, the body, the practical facts that do not move when you feel differently about them. A strong Earth rune with a troubled reading elsewhere usually means the situation is safer than it feels.

Air — what is said and thought

Communication, ideas, the story you are telling about the situation. This is where the reading most often locates a problem that turns out to be a misunderstanding rather than a conflict, and where advice about saying something out loud tends to land.

Fire — what drives it

Will, appetite, the energy actually available to you. Fire answers the question you did not ask: do you want this. A weak Fire rune beside strong Earth and Air often explains a plan that keeps not happening despite being perfectly sensible.

Water — what is felt

Emotion, intuition, the undercurrent. Water is the position that most often disagrees with the others, and when it does, it is worth listening to first: it reports what you already know and have not admitted.

Spirit holds the other four

The fifth rune is not a summary. It names the meaning of the situation — what it is for, what it is teaching, where it belongs in a larger pattern. Read it last, and read it against the element that came out weakest.

Look for the imbalance

The point of an elemental spread is the shape, not the individual stones. Four warm runes and one cold one tell you exactly where the work is. All five pulling the same way means the situation is not divided, however complicated it looks from inside.

When elements contradict

Fire against Water is desire against feeling. Air against Earth is the story against the facts. These pairs are the reading, and naming which two are fighting usually does more than any single rune meaning.

Where it fits among the spreads

Five elements suits a whole situation seen from every side at once. For a situation moving through time, the three rune reading puts it on a line instead; for the same four-way balance turned inward on yourself, there is the inner harmony spread.

ᚠ Fehu in Earth

Fehu is cattle, movable wealth — the thing you have that can also be lost or spent. In the Earth position it usually speaks about resources in motion rather than security, which is a different message from what people hope to read there.

ᚺ Hagalaz in Air

Hagalaz is the hailstorm, disruption arriving from outside. Landing in Air it points at news, a conversation, or something said that changed the weather — and it usually locates the cause outside your own choices.

ᛏ Tiwaz in Fire

Tiwaz is the sky god and the straight spear: will pointed in one direction. In the Fire position it is one of the clearest stones in the spread, and it reads as a cost as much as a strength, because that kind of focus gives things up.

Reversed runes

A reversed rune — merkstave — usually means the same force blocked, delayed or turned inward rather than its opposite, and in an elemental spread it most often marks the element that is being neglected.
