Overcoming Fear Rune Spread:
Four Runes to Give a Fear Its Edges
Four Elder Futhark runes on one fear: what you are actually facing, where it came from, the strength you already have, and the way through.
You draw all four stones yourself and the reading is written around the fear you name. It is a reflective practice rather than treatment — useful for thinking clearly, not a substitute for a doctor or a therapist. Free, and no account.
The Four Positions
Challenge — what you are facing
The first stone describes the fear as it actually is, which is frequently narrower than the shape it takes at three in the morning. Fears grow in vagueness; the value of this position is that it gives the thing edges.
Origin — where it came from
Not always your own history. This position often points at something inherited, absorbed from a household, or learned from one bad experience that then generalised. Knowing where a fear started does not dissolve it, but it does stop it feeling like a fact about you.
Power — what you have to meet it with
The strength already available, named specifically rather than as encouragement. This is the position to read twice. Most people underestimate what is in it, and the fourth rune depends on this one being taken seriously.
Freedom — the way through
What the situation looks like on the other side, and the step that leads there. It is usually smaller than expected — fears are rarely defeated in one move, and the spread tends to point at the first one rather than the last.
Rune Positions and Meanings
Using It Well
This is reflection, not treatment
Fear that keeps you from working, sleeping, eating or leaving the house is worth taking to a doctor or a therapist, and a rune reading is not a substitute for that. Use this spread for thinking, for naming things, for sitting with something quietly — it is good at that and it is not good at the other.
Name the fear specifically
Anxiety is a large word covering many different things. I am afraid that if I ask for the promotion they will say I am not ready gives all four positions something to hold. The reading is written around the words you type.
When it is really grief or change
Fear during a transition often turns out to be the transition rather than a fear. The transition and change spread reads that shape better, with a position for what you are ready for.
When it is what you are hiding from yourself
If the thing you are afraid of is something about yourself, the shadow work reading is built for exactly that, with six positions for what is buried and what it costs to keep it there.
Runes That Change the Reading
ᛈ Perthro in Origin
Perthro is the dice cup: what is hidden, chance, the unknown. In the Origin position it often means the source is not fully visible even to you — and that chasing it further may matter less than the Power and Freedom stones.
ᚢ Uruz in Power
Uruz is the wild ox: strength that is real and unrefined. Here it says the capacity is there but has not been trained on this particular fear yet, which is different from not having it.
ᛞ Dagaz in Freedom
Dagaz is daybreak, the moment one state becomes another. In the fourth position it describes a change that arrives as a threshold rather than a gradual easing — and it cannot appear reversed, so it always reads straight.
Reversed runes
A reversed rune — merkstave — means the same force blocked, delayed or turned inward rather than its opposite. In the Power position it usually means a strength you have but do not credit yourself with. Every rune, both ways up, is in the Elder Futhark guide.
